Wimbledon Prize Money

2021 sees the return of the Wimbledon Championships after it was the only slam to be cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

This year players will compete for a share of £35 million in prize money. A reduction of -7.85% compared to the £38 million total prize money in 2019.

However, this amount does not account for player accommodation that the AELTC will cover in 2021, so the total outlay will be higher than two years ago in real terms. This year no daily allowances (per diem expenses) are included in the prize money figure either (£1,081,000 in 2019) and instead are bundled with the hotel expenses etc. that are kept under wraps.

As for specific player remuneration, the 2021 Wimbledon champion will take home a cheque for £1,700,000; this is down 27.66% compared to what Novak Djokovic received in 2019. The runner up will bag themselves £900,000, a similar size drop of 23.40% vs 2019.

However, the early and middle rounds buck the trend and see a small prize money increase as the tournament has again focused its efforts on supporting players who aren't as well off financially.

For example, first-round losers receive £48,000 this year, a small 6.67% rise compared to two years ago. Losers in qualifying also see a boost, with Q1 losers receiving a 21.43% pay bump up to £8500.

When setting prize money levels for this year, the AELTC considered a number of factors, including constraints on crowd capacity; the substantial investment required to provide quality accommodation with a full range of services in order to create a Minimised Risk Environment as well as a comprehensive testing programme for players and their support teams; and significant financial support for the wider grass court season, both in the UK and Europe. 2020

Although the Wimbledon Championships were sadly cancelled for 2020, thanks to the AELTC Pandemic Insurance, £10m of prize money was distributed amongst the 620 players who would have taken part in the 2020 Championships.

Players will receive one payment each, and the money, which comes as a result of insurance cover for cancellation, will be distributed as follows:

  • £25,000 for the 256 players in the singles main draws
  • £12,500 for the 224 players in singles qualifying
  • £6,250 for the 120 players in main draw doubles
  • £6,000 for the 16 players in the wheelchair events
  • £5,000 for four players in the quad wheelchair events

A nice gesture from Wimbledon that has drawn plaudits from both players and fans, but it's worth noting the insurance policy had this as part of the terms of the payout. So The AELTC didn't do it purely out of altruism :D.

However, we must give credit to Wimbledon for having the foresight to purchase pandemic insurance after the SARS outbreak in 2003. The AELTC has paid £25.5m over the 17-year period and recovered around £114m, making it a very sensible investment.

Immediately following the cancellation of The Championships, we turned our attention to how we could assist those who help make Wimbledon happen. We know these months of uncertainty have been very worrying for these groups, including the players, many of whom have faced financial difficulty during this period and who would have quite rightly anticipated the opportunity to earn prize money at Wimbledon based on their world ranking. We are pleased that our insurance policy has allowed us to recognise the impact of the cancellation on the players and that we are now in a position to offer this payment as a reward for the hard work they have invested in building their ranking to a point where they would have gained direct entry into The Championships 2020. Richard Lewis CBE, AELTC Chief Executive
